Dr. Schmidt studied law at the University of Münster with a focus on economics and international law. Subsequently, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Dr. Otto Sandrock at the Institut für Internationales Wirtschaftsrecht (Institute for International Economic Law), where he graduated in 1991 with a dissertation on the international enforcement of attorneys’ fees.
Dr. Schmidt has been practicing as an attorney since 1993. He knows both the internal and external aspects of legal consultancy in the corporate sector. He began his career at Droste in 1992, which later merged with Hogan Lovells, one of the leading international firms in the area of commercial law. He went to Mannesmann in 1996 and there acquired many years of industry experience as legal counsel and as an authorized representative at Mannesmann Demag AG, Mannesmann Dematic AG, Siemens AG, as well as Head of Legal and General Counsel at Mannesmannröhren-Werke and Benteler AG. Dr. Schmidt completed extensive stays abroad in the US, Australia, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands and specializes in questions of international law and commercial law including labor law. He supported large plant construction projects around the world and collaborated with the German Federal Bar for nearly ten years on its Committee for International Civil and Procedural Law. In recent years he has also acquired expertise in the area of product liability, compliance, warranty management, and recall management, especially in the automotive supply industry.
Dr. Schmidt advises medium-sized businesses as well as listed companies.
